I would like to analyze these statement:

Kapha has had a bad rep in the contemporary yogic and ayurvedic world as representing obesity, lethargy and laziness. The truth is far from it. Good kapha is the foundation of sustained energy, physical, mental and emotional, the type of energy that allows you to do wonders throughout the day and still be able to get a full night’s sleep (yes, we do need energy to get a good night sleep.)

Good kapha, in English, in terms of food, translates to good fat. As a matter of fact, ayurveda has been recommending, for thousands of years, starting the day with a few tablespoons of ghee (ghee is clarified butter). By the way, one of our private clients’ Aunt, who lives in India, has been adding ghee to her morning black tea for years. She is 70 years old now, still jogs and feels great.

We tend to confuse energy with stress. According to ayurveda, in today’s society, a lot of us are vata deranged. This means that we “move a lot”, mentally, physically and emotionally without enough focus and control. This is the result of us getting too much sugar in and not enough good fat.

Archetype of the Primal Cobra

  • Start in the prone position with your forehead or your chin against the floor, your hands alongside your chest and your elbows close to your body.
  • On an inhalation, lift your head, neck and chest slowly, vertebra by vertebra.
  • Lift with your back muscles using your hands only as guides.
  • Straighten your arms only to the extent that they continue to support the length and opening of your spine without compression.
  • Broaden your collar bones and lift your chest, drawing the shoulders down and back.
  • Ground your legs as your pelvis and chest rise up.
  • Look up with your eyes, not with your neck.
  • Hold the pose for 10 to 20 seconds and with control lower your upper body to the floor.

THE NOT SO JUICY TRUTH ABOUT SMOOTHIES & JUICING

One of my most favorite things for years had been a delicious organic green smoothie made with something like apple, kale, carrots, celery, berries, almond butter, chia seeds, cilantro, ginger, cinnamon, cardamom, turmeric, coconut oil and/or any other type of greens/fruits/spices you can think of.

Sounds delicious and nutritious doesn’t it? I used to have two full glasses of this in the morning and loving every sip/spoonful :-) of it.

An hour later I would be so incredibly hungry and “blame” my Pitta type of digestion. :-) For those of you not familiar with Ayurveda, Pitta digestion implies overly strong, quick digestion that needs to be controlled.

Those of you who know me, know that I love to analyze everything (and yes, over-analyze too :-) ). It made no sense to me that two full glasses of that delicious and nutritious smoothie would not fill me up and give me tremendous energy for several hours.

veggies After extended research and analysis it all fell into place for me. Here are some critical bullet points of what I found:

  • Liquids hit the system much quicker than solid food (even after it has gone through the chewing process).
  • Sugar is sugar. Your body doesn’t know the difference between the sugar in a ‘green drink’ and the sugar in a soda.
  • This “sugar attack” causes an immediate and marked insulin response. Your body needs to get it out of your blood.
  • When it’s out of your blood, the hard crash happens, it’s called “hypoglycemia”.
  • There is also a dark side to raw vegetables, fruits, seeds and nuts: Some examples include oxalates, goitrogens and lectins. Oxalates can cause muscle weakness, goitrogens can disrupt the thyroid function and lectins can disrupt the digestion (more on these at a later blog). A lot of these symptoms may be avoided by processes like steaming, light cooking, soaking, sprouting and roasting.

So I decided to replace one of my most favorite things, my smoothie, with cooked vegetables, lean protein and some good fat. And what a surprisingly wise transition that was! Here are some points I noticed: I stopped experiencing bloatedness, my complexion improved, my energy level increased even more, I was not becoming hungry an hour later, and some other things that I would rather not share.

And now, I no longer miss the smoothie.

THE BEST COFFEE WE’VE EVER HAD.

We both grew up in coffee dominated families. Tim grew up with a coffee pot brewing every morning. His family would not start moving until a pot was made. Any time they visited other family members or vice versa, the coffee pot was a big part of the gathering. So, yes, Tim has drank lots of coffee throughout his life.

I, on the other hand, grew up drinking the old-fashioned greek (aka turkish :-) ) coffee, mixed in with whole milk. I eventually graduated to the more modern, European Nescafé Frappé, stylish type of coffee. Little did I know that was I taking a step back, in terms of my health. :-)

A few years ago, we both started drinking organic, fair trade, shade grown coffee. The difference in taste was dramatic.

A couple of years later, one of our “anal” but dear friends, turned us onto single origin coffee. The
difference in taste was again dramatic. A shift towards a greater cup of coffee had been made.

Upgraded-Bulletproof-Coffee Up until a few months ago, we were drinking our coffee black and the thought of adding anything to it was considered a “coffee blasphemy”.

However, as we were studying more and more about our other favorite food in life, butter, we ran across the term Bulletproof, a style of coffee created by biohacker Dave Asprey.

One of the fundamental concepts of Bulletproof is adding 100% grass fed butter and MCT oil (medium chain triglycerides) to your cup of Joe. At the moment we did not have any MCT oil, so we went to the next best thing, extra virgin organic coconut oil. To our surprise, this coffee drink tasted awesome!

As we ran out of our single origin coffee, we decided to test the Bulletproof Upgraded Coffee. And we are glad we did. We never knew that plain black coffee could taste so smooth, almost silky-ish.

So the bottom line is that the Bulletproof Upgaraded Coffee makes the best cup of coffee that we have ever had. Whether you want to drink your coffee the Bulletproof way or black this is the best bean we know of.

Bulletproof Coffee Specs:

– Start with 1 cup (8 oz.) filtered water, just off the boil.

– Measure 2 1/2 heaping tablespoons freshly ground Bulletproof Upgraded Coffee beans and brew using your favorite coffee brewing method. According to Dave Asprey this bean takes care of the mycotoxin issue that other coffee beans may have.

– Pour in 1 teaspoon MCT oil.

– Add 1 tablespoon grass-fed, unsalted butter or ghee.

– Mix in a blender (we use the Magic Bullet) for 20 seconds until the oil and butter are emulsified so the drink is frothy and looks like a creamy latte without a film of oil on the surface.

Dave Asprey claims that by drinking the above daily, you will become smarter. I am not sure if I have become smarter but I do feel more creative. I do not see a change in Tim. :-) :-)

AYURVEDA & PALEO FRIENDLY BANANA PANCAKES

ayurveda & paleo friendly banana pancakes

Ingredients:

- One banana (preferably organic and ripe)
- One egg (preferably pasture eggs)
- Pasture butter or coconut oil or ghee
- A pinch of Himalayan salt (optional)
- A pinch of cinnamon (optional)

Instructions:

- Peel the banana and cut it into pieces and mash it.

- Mix in the egg. You can use a mixer, we prefer the magic bullet. Blend it well enough to get an even     consistency.

- Add the salt & cinnamon, if desired.

- Coat the pan with coconut oil, or ghee, or pastured butter and heat it to medium heat.

- Spoon out a round pancake in the pan. Cook like you would with traditional pancakes. Let brown on
   one side, flip to the other side and brown.

- Makes 3 small pancakes.

- They taste sweet enough that you won’t even need maple syrup!

Located 96 miles northeast of Atlanta’s Hartsfield International Airport, or about a nine hour drive from our Yoga Energy Studio, the “Yogi Bear Shack” is a spectacular cabin perched on the side of Mt. Yonah overlooking the serene Blue Ridge Mountains near Cleveland, Georgia.

Here we will offer our advanced yoga therapy course beginning on Friday, April 25, at our 6 p.m. “meet and greet,” and ending after brunch at 10 a.m. on Sunday, May 4. While you may be tempted not to leave the scenic mountain views, the Sunday departure is mandatory.

You can bet that this course will go above and beyond any other yoga therapy course you have ever taken!

You will spend 9 unforgettable nights and 10 life-changing days examining each of these in depth:

  • Ayurveda (based on Dr. Lad’s and David Frawley’s approach)

Yes! The $2,480 per person rate includes the 100 hour advanced yoga training course, lodging, and food. However, if you sign up prior to February 27th, the cost is $2,150. Transportation costs are not included.

***For those of you already registered in our 300 Hour Yoga Alliance Teacher Training Program, the cost is $1,980.

A $500 non-refundable deposit is required to reserve a space, and there are no refunds on deposits once your application is approved for our training course (no exceptions).

The Yoga Energy Studio will be hosting its first YOGA/FITNESS retreat at the Yogi Bear Shack.

WHERE IS THE YOGI BEAR SHACK?

The “Yogi Bear Shack”, your home away from home is a spectacular cabin on the side of Mount Yonah in Cleveland, GA, overlooking the scenic Blue Ridge Mountains. It’s all about rustic comfort.

The “Yogi Bear Shack” is located 96 miles north east of Atlanta Airport, It is 9 hours from the Yoga Energy Studio.

WHEN?

The getaway starts on Thursday December 5th with an evening meet-and-greet and ends on Sunday December 8th after brunch. Even though you are going to want to stay longer, Sunday departure is mandatory. :-)

WHAT WILL I BE DOING?

You will spend 3 amazing nights and 4 adventurous days hiking, trail running, rock climbing (beginner level), practicing yoga, strength training, bird watching, star gazing, enjoying evening campfires or doing absolutely nothing.

Other activities such as horseback riding, myofascial release therapy and ayurvedic consultations are available at an additional cost.

STAND UP PADDLE CARABINERS & DRYBAGS

I have spent over 40 years on the water and during the whole time there have been two main rules that I live by.

Rule #1: If it’s not in a dry bag, it is wet.
Rule #2: If it’s not securely attached to the board, it’s over board.

So with that said dry bags and carabiners have become a necessity for me.

Let’s first talk about dry bags. It is worth mentioning that a ziploc bag is NOT a dry bag and if you only use ziploc bags your gear will get wet. I probably have over 50 dry bags, in all different sizes, sizes, ranging from just big enough to carry a wallet to a 90 liter backpack.

For paddle boarding, I prefer:

(a) The flat shape such as the Hydrolock Grommetted Dry Bags by NRS versus the oval shape,
      it makes it a lot easier to store multiple bags.
(b) A light color bag so the items inside the bag stay cooler.
(c) A clear window, to have visual access to what is inside the bag.
(d) To always double bag sensitive electronic devices.
(e) To use ziploc bags to separate non-sensitive items inside the dry bag for easier handling.

When using a dry bag, always make sure to secure it properly which brings us to my other necessity, the carabiners.

I use a carabiner to attach the dry bags to the board. I use different size and type carabiners made anywhere from stainless steel to high quality aluminum.

I do not use the fake, plastic carabiners. They will break and you will loose your gear.

As long as you use the higher quality carabiners, they will also be handy for rescuing and towing.
