THE BOGA DEEP 8 – GREAT THINGS COME IN SMALL PACKAGES

The BOGA Deep 8 at Fort De Soto Park

The BOGA Deep 8 at Fort De Soto Park

Hello SUP’ers! This is Vie from the SUP Guide & Adventure Store in St Petersburg, FL. I would like to talk to you about one of my most favorite boards, the BOGA Deep 8.

According to BOGA, the BOGA Deep 8 is designed specifically for stand up paddle surfing. Having said that, this blog has nothing to do with surfing but has everything to do with flat water paddling — we have very little “surf” on the west coast of Florida. :-)

Those of you who know me, know that I am 5’1″ weighing in at 108 lbs which makes it very difficult for me to carry, tie down and maneuver a board 10’6″ or longer.

I have paddled numerous boards that range from 8’6″ to 14′. I have found that around 10’6″ is where a board starts becoming less fun for me to paddle, as it looses its responsiveness.

Paddling the BOGA Deep 8

Always on, while you are on the BOGA Deep 8

What I love about the BOGA Deep 8 is that I always feel the board under my feet, if I relax too much I get reminded of that (I fall in :-) ). And yes, I can even practice yoga on this board. With a 10’6″ board, I can become lazy, loose focus and still be paddling. I don’t like that, it’s boring.

Keep in mind, that this is not a “never-paddled before, let’s go paddle” type of board. If you are already an experienced paddler, under 136 lbs looking for a new challenge, this is your board.

If you are a new paddler, under 136 lbs you should hire a good SUP Instructor to get you on this board. We have found, it takes less than 2 hrs for a new person to start enjoying the BOGA Deep 8.

Some of the main specs of this board:

  • 8’6″ x 28.25″ x 4″ (small package)
  • Weight — 16 lbs (love it!!)
  • Volume — 105 liters (supports up to 136 lbs of experienced paddler on flat water, can take a bigger paddler in surf)
  • 1.5 lbs of EPS Vacuum Bagged Bamboo; Epoxy Construction
  • Maintenance free vent
  • GoPro Camera mount — cool feature! Get your GoPro camera here: GoPro Camera
  • Thruster set up for fins (Quad includes quad FUTURE boxes) — Overkill for flat water paddling, great for surf

BOGA Deep 8, so easy to handle

I love the BOGA Deep 8, so easy to handle!

SUP EXPEDITIONS WITH THE SAWYER 3-PIECE PADDLES

Entrance to Hades

Paddling Cape Tenaron, Greece

As most of you know we have been stand up paddling for over 8 years now. During these past 8 years we have been able to SUP both domestically and internationally. Up until a couple of years ago we had been unable to find a good traveling paddle that did not break or weighed “a ton”. This all changed a little over 2 years with the Sawyer 3-piece paddles.

There are two main designs available in the Sawyer Travel series.

The one we started with and are still loving is the Mana Quickdraw Traveler. This paddle is light-weight and it can fit perfectly into an inflatable paddle board backpack or very easily attach to a day-pack. Sawyer says that this paddle utilizes their streamlined Lever Lock adjustable grip system for “On-the-Fly” adjustability in conjunction with their TiteSet connection system to provide a quick and easy break down section in the lower shaft.

What this means, in our words, is that we can easily put it together and take it apart in a matter of seconds.

Sawyer Mana Quickdraw Travelers

The Sawyer Mana Quickdraw Travelers

Main Specs:

– Carbon fiber 3-piece travel SUP paddle.
– Laminated wood blades reinforced with fiberglass.
– 11° bent shaft.
– Lower shaft TiteSet connection system.
– QuickDraw Adjustable Grip.
– Available in 3 profiles.

The second design, the Storm Quickdraw Traveler features a lower price and a stronger blade. Sawyer says that the paddle has an Ultra-tough CFRT (Continuous Fiber-Tech Reinforced) construction blade with a fiberglass shaft.

What this means, in our words, is that we were able to use it in rivers and rocky beaches.

Paddling Platamonas, Greece

Main Specs:

– Ultra-tough 3-piece composite SUP paddle.
– Molded CFRT blade available in two sizes.
– 11° bent tubular fiberglass shaft.
– TiteSet break-down connection system.
– Lever Lock Adjustable Grip.

There is no other travel paddle that can even come close in comparison to these two paddles.

THE LEATHERMAN WAVE, A MUST HAVE TOOL FOR STAND UP PADDLE CAMPING

LEATHERMAN WAVE FOR SUP CAMPING

As some of you know I have been kayak camping for over 25 years, have been stand up paddling for over 8 years but just started stand up paddle camping this past year. So over the last 25 years I have purchased some great gear, some ok gear and some terrible gear.

This is one of the great pieces of gear. The Leatherman Wave I have had for at least 10 years if not 15 and it has been on every camping trip that I have been on.

It fits in the palm of your hand and it is light-weight.

I have the old model but it was revamped in 2004 with outside-accessible blades that can be deployed with just one hand. The new Wave has larger knives, stronger pliers, longer wire cutters, and all-locking blades, you can find it here: Leatherman Multi-Tool

Mine is still working great but I am looking forward to one day getting the new one.

STAND UP PADDLE CARABINERS & DRYBAGS

sup camping drybags

I have spent over 40 years on the water and during the whole time there have been two main rules that I live by.

Rule #1: If it’s not in a dry bag, it is wet.
Rule #2: If it’s not securely attached to the board, it’s over board.

So with that said dry bags and carabiners have become a necessity for me.

Let’s first talk about dry bags. It is worth mentioning that a ziploc bag is NOT a dry bag and if you only use ziploc bags your gear will get wet. I probably have over 50 dry bags, in all different sizes, sizes, ranging from just big enough to carry a wallet to a 90 liter backpack.

For paddle boarding, I prefer:

(a) The flat shape such as the Hydrolock Grommetted Dry Bags by NRS versus the oval shape,
it makes it a lot easier to store multiple bags.
(b) A light color bag so the items inside the bag stay cooler.
(c) A clear window, to have visual access to what is inside the bag.
(d) To always double bag sensitive electronic devices.
(e) To use ziploc bags to separate non-sensitive items inside the dry bag for easier handling.

When using a dry bag, always make sure to secure it properly which brings us to my other necessity, the carabiners.

Get the dry bags we use here:

DryCASE Water-Proof Case for iPhone

DryCASE Waterproof Backpack

NRS HydroLock Grommeted Drybag

NRS Hydrolock Dry Bag Small

Sea to Summit Big River Dry Bag

sup camping carabiners

I use a carabiner to attach the dry bags to the board. I use different size and type carabiners made anywhere from stainless steel to high quality aluminum.

I do not use the fake, plastic carabiners. They will break and you will loose your gear.

As long as you use the higher quality carabiners, they will also be handy for rescuing and towing.

SUPPER GEAR FOR YOUR SUP CAMPING TRIPS

SUP camping eating utensils

Continuing on with our SUP Camping gear, we found that as far as eating/hydrating goes, the most comfortable and yet streamlined way for us consists of Sea to Summit plates, bowls and cups, Kung Foon sporks and chopsticks and Platypus water bottles/Camelbak bladders.

We found that the Sea to Summit plates, bowls and cups are very sturdy, durable, small in size (since they compress) and very easy to clean. You can get them here: Sea to Summit Plates, Bowls and Cups

The Kung Foon sporks and chopsticks are ideal. The spork is titanium so it does not break like most of our other plastic sporks and since we try to take our time and savor our food, the chopsticks that come with the spork make us “slow down” to enjoy the outdoor experience. You can get them here: Kung Foon Spork

Our “water bottles” are a mixture of the plastic Platypus ones, when off the board and Camelbak Stoaway hydration bladders when on the board. Even though our favorite bottles when we are not on the road are the glass Lifefactory, glass is not that practical on an inflatable stand up paddle board. :-) You can get all of the water bottles we use here:

Platypus Soft Bottle

Camelbak Products StoAway Hydration Packs

Lifefactory Glass Beverage Bottle with Flip Top Cap

The above gear makes it very practical for eating and storage is a breeze. As a side note, some times we also bring a Jetboil Cooking System and/or a Primus Profile Propane 2 Burner Stove for cooking and coffee/tea. :-)

THE NRS HIGH PRESSURE K-PUMP K-20 IS A GAME CHANGER FOR ISUP’s

kpump k-20 for isup

We have been teaching paddle boarding, SUP Guide Training and SUP & YOGA Teacher Training for over 8 years, domestically and internationally. Therefore, we have encountered all sorts of inflatable paddle boards. The most challenging part of an inflatable paddle board is to inflate it to the proper psi.

We have used several types of hand-held and “bicycle pump” style devices. All of them were extremely difficult to use during those last high-pressure, low-volume psi’s making it almost impossible to inflate the board to its maximum capacity.

Last year, NRS came out with the BRAVO high-pressure 12-Volt pump that made life much easier. We were able to inflate numerous paddle boards quickly. The two drawbacks to this pump were “bulkiness” and needing a car battery.

This brought us back to using hand pumps for a lot of our remote trips and trainings. Three months ago, we were able to get our hands on NRS’s newest release, the K-PUMP K-20 a high-pressure two-stage pump. And this was truly a game-changer for the ISUP industry. This pump is extremely easy to use, making it very quick to inflate boards up to 25 psi. I no longer get an arm and back workout trying to fill up one board. It is also still very compact fitting nicely into your ISUP backpack or even your regular carry-on luggage.

Get yours here: K-Pump K20 HP SUP & Kayak Pump

If you do not already a pressure gauge that fits your inflatable, this is the one that NRS recommends and we have used on all different types of boards: K-Pump Kwik Check ::: Pressure Gauge

No matter what brand of inflatable board you have this pump is a must for you.

THE COREBAN MAMMOTH, A BOARD THAT WON’T BECOME EXTINCT!

Coreban Mammoth on the water

During the last several months, we have made quite a few trips. The most notable ones have been a 2-week overseas paddle board adventure to Greece and a 7-day paddle board camping expedition to the Florida Keys.

While on these trips we used several pieces of equipment that we would like to talk about.

Th first piece of equipment is the Coreban Mammoth. It is an 11’0 x 36” x 4 3/4” board with a volume of 245 liters making it perfect for all sizes and abilities. It comes in three different types of construction, Coreban’s Pure, Core and Soft Top Dura Core.

We chose to use the Coreban Mammoth Core along with two Coreban BG’s ISUPs during our paddle board camping Keys trip (more on the Coreban BG’s in the future). This board was given to Keith who is a great skier/ice climber but a novice when it comes to melted water.

The Coreban Mammoth

The Mammoth was able to carry Keith weighing in at 190 lbs, all of his gear and some of our food. Since it does not come with any built-in tie-down straps we used a suction cup system from SUPTHINGS to hold all the gear. There was enough room to distribute the gear on the nose and tail of the board.

Even though the Mammoth is a larger board it still moved smoothly and swiftly on the water without sacrificing speed. The board was able to handle flat water and heavy chop with no issues.

On a side note, we have used Mammoth boards for several demos and as of this date we have not had any one who could not paddle or did not like this board. So if you are planning on taking your kids out, your dog out, practicing yoga or just going for a leisurely paddle this board is great for all of those things combined.

A true all around board, for everything from a day paddle to a week long camping trip.

INFLATABLE SUP’s – WHAT ARE THEY GOOD FOR? ABSOLUTELY A LOT!

Here at our Stand Up Paddle Store we receive a lot of questions regarding boards and gear. This is a question that we are often asked that we would like to address: “Why should I buy an inflatable paddle board?”

There are many good reasons and here are a few:

1. Inflatable paddle boards are great for people with storage/space issues, such as apartments or boats. When deflated they become very compact.

2. Inflatable paddle boards are great for people who travel a lot. They even fit in the airplanes’s overhead compartment. With a Sawyer 3-piece paddle, you can get away with carry-on.

3. Inflatable paddle boards are great for kids. They are lightweight, easy to maneuver, they have some cushion to absorb falls on the deck and they are very hard to damage.

20130413-091320.jpg

4. Inflatable paddle boards are great for beginner paddlers. Due to the cushioned deck absorbing falls well, they take away the very first instinctive fear of falling allowing the paddler to focus on the paddling technique.

5. Inflatable paddle boards are very durable. The surface materials used are the same high-strength materials used in white water rafts, so they can take a beating without damage or puncture. This is in contrast to a typical epoxy board that can ding and dent very easily if dropped on the rocks or just through everyday use.

inflatable sup

When looking for an inflatable paddle board though there are a few key points to consider:

– You want to make sure that the board is strong enough to support the paddler without adopting the
    “banana”-like shape in the middle.
– The board should not need extra reinforcement on the rails.
– The fill valve should be of the highest quality so you do not continuously have to refill the board.

There are many paddle board companies making inflatable boards these days but you want to look for a company who has long-term history hence experience in creating inflatable water vessels.
