The Origins of Spartan Yoga Continue

Everything the Spartans did, from speaking to physical activity followed the principal of austerity. Spartans are very famous for their “laconic phrases”. The word “laconism” comes from Laconia, a polis of ancient Greece (and region of modern Greece) surrounding the city of Sparta proper. A “laconism” is a figure of speech, in which someone uses very few words (very concise or terse statement) to express an idea, in keeping with the Spartan reputation for austerity.

The word “calisthenics” also depicts how the Spartans thought of physical, mental and spiritual health. “Calistenics” comes from “kallos” which means “beauty” and “sthenos” which means strength. To Spartans, health required both beauty and strength of the body, mind and soul. The calisthenic agoge was a significant part of the Spartans’ training system and it involved using only the body weight for resistance and little or no equipment at all.

One of the earliest mentions of calisthenics can be found in the chronicles of Herodotus on the Battle of Thermopylae (480 BC). Herodotus is a Greek historian who lived in the 5th century BC. He states that when Xerxes (who led the Persians against the 300 Spartans) sent spies to watch the military camp of Sparta, they said the Spartans exercised their bodies with synchronized and rhythmic movements (spartan yoga), a fact that was misinterpreted by the Persians as a form of dancing and therefore a sign of weakness.

So, come experience Spartan Yoga and find the hero within at one of our upcoming classes or series.

The Origins of Spartan Yoga

As many of you already know, we have gotten away from the traditional yoga classes and have been teaching what may seem as a new style. We call it Spartan Yoga.

In fact, Spartan Yoga is modern terminology conveying an extremely old and very effective style of training.

Spartan Yoga is the form of physical, emotional, mental and spiritual training that originated in Ancient Sparta. It creates the austerity, skill, strength and compassion of the body, emotions, mind and soul required for the individual to fulfill their purpose in life (whether they know what their purpose is or not.)

The Spartans believed that as human beings we all have one thing in common, the desire to live with purpose. That purpose can be being a parent, a teacher, a waiter, a gardener, a medical doctor, a police officer, a builder, anything that serves the betterment of humanity.

Spartan Yoga is not specialized, it is simple. It is not wasting energy and effort, it is all about the economy of action. It is using the most effective movements in the shortest amount of time. Whether training for every day life or to compete in the Olympic games, the ancient Greeks believed that the body should be exercised as a whole, not in isolated parts.

According to Spartan Yoga the power is within us. It is based on empirical evidence, on results, not on theory, or philosophies. It is up to us, the individual, whether we will succeed or fail. The power is given to the person, not their teacher or guru.

So, find the hero within at one of our upcoming classes or series.

GRATITUDE OVERLOAD

gratitude overload “Be in a state of gratitude for everything that shows up in your life.” -Wayne Dyer

Sounds wonderful, what a great little quote, but easier said than done! Hard to remember and quick to forget. We tend to remind ourselves and each other all about gratitude during the major holidays when love and appreciation are in the air. As soon as the calendar page turns, it all disappears.

So the question is, how do we keep gratitude alive every moment of the day? Just like everything else in life, all it takes is practice. Practice makes permanent.

Wayne Dyer says “Be thankful for the storms as well as the smooth sailing. What is the lesson or gift in what you are experiencing right now? Find your joy not in what’s missing in your life but in how you can serve.”

Some say gratitude is when memory is stored in the heart and not in the mind. So when we think with our heart and not with our mind, we remain in a state of gratitude.

In the yogic philosophy of Patanjali and the Yoga Sutras we would look at the “nyama santosha” नियम सन्तोष which means the “practice of contentment”. In “contentment” we are thankful for everything we have, the life we have created, every one we come in contact with and everything that happens to us.

Poet John Milton says “Gratitude bestows reverence, allowing us to encounter everyday epiphanies, those transcendent moments of awe that change forever how we experience life and the world.”

We all need our little reminders, some of us more often than others. Whether it be it a book, a poem, the Yoga Sutras or a gratitude stone that you carry with you, use it to keep the practice of gratitude alive.

See you on the mat and as Ganesha would say, “Enjoy Life and Feed Your Rat!”
