“Paleo”, such an old concept and yet a relatively new and very controversial term.
Who knew that sound evidence and proven scientific facts would cause so much confusion and havoc?
“Paleo” whether as in diet or lifestyle, or fitness or whatever else one can come up with, is now being colored and decorated by all sorts of different shades and adjectives.
But why is that? Well, according to John Durant’s “The Paleo Manifesto” there is a mismatch between our genes and the lives that we lead today. Dr. Art de Vany wrote a 26-page essay titled “Evolutionary Fitness”, on this simple premise (Paleo Manifesto – page 5).
This mismatch carries over to a larger extent, applying itself between our conscious mind and our genes. Our biological core is still at large hunters and gatherers. But our conscious mind, also carries the imprints of primates, herders and farmers, factory workers and explorers; office workers and computer programmers.
This implies that we are confused all the way around. Paleo advocates understand to some extent the need to “replicate the natural habitat to thrive in the modern world” (Paleo Manifesto – page 12). But what they seem to be missing is the big picture.
“I have been trying to say that it is necessary now not only to know thyself, but also to know thy species and to understand the wisdom of nature, and especially living in nature, if we are to understand and help man develop his own wisdom in a way that will lead to life of such quality as to make living a desirable and fulfilling experience.” Dr Jonas Salk, the discover of the polio vaccine (Paleo Manifesto – page 28)
It’s true that “humanity’s explosion onto the world stage was made possible by the expansion of our most defining trait: the brain” (Paleo Manifesto – page 31)
But that is also what eventually led to the current disconnect between our own “intelligence” and the wisdom of nature. We took things way too far, thinking in terms of survival, in terms of numbers, following the agricultural revolution while loosing site of the flow of nature.
And here we are, trying to make sense of what should be our innate wisdom. Wondering where to start? The Paleo Manifesto will give you the sound foundation you need to make the right decisions for you. You can find it here.
These decisions will give you the meaningful experiences that will turn into an ongoing lifestyle.
